NAIDOC Week 2019

Learning About Indigenous History

This week we have been celebrating and learning about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and the 2019 NAIDOC week logo – Voice, Treaty, Truth. We were very fortunate to have Evie’s Nan Lois come in and share with us. Lois was previously a teacher and has a special interest and knowledge in the local Gumbaynggirr language and culture.

Some of the activities that Lois shared with us were:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Flags: Explaining the two flags and their symbolic meanings
  • Songs using tapping sticks: ‘Welcome to Country Song’ and ‘Head, Shoulders, Knee’s and Toes’ in Gumbaynggirr language and ‘Inanay Capuana’ a Torres Strait Islander lullaby (See photo’s lyrics of songs)
  • Animals: Learning the Gumbaynggirr animal names
  • Dance: through the animal actions and movements
  • Stories: Felt board story of ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’ by Pamela Lofts, Mary Albert and book ‘When the Snake Bites the Sun’ by David Mowaljarlai, Pamela Lofts (Compiled by), children of the Kimberly (Illustrator)

Thank you so much Lois for sharing your interests, passion and knowledge with us as we celebrate NAIDOC week 2019 and our local Gumbaynggirr People.
