Within our preschool outdoor environment we have a lot of bush tucker and native plants that attract native wildlife in the form of birds, bees, insects and lizards. These plants, shrubs and trees have always had a place within our environment as we use them in our cooking, craft and sensory play.
The idea for a bush tucker garden initially came from us recognising the importance of connecting to our local Aboriginal culture by forming a connection to Country and its flora and fauna, through teaching our children about the land we live on.
By creating a space that encompasses these native plants we can learn about how we can use plants for a variety of purposes.
Recently we have purchased some bush tucker signage that identifies the cultural knowledge, its uses and where it can be grown. These signs are placed alongside the bush tucker plant throughout our outdoor play space.
The children have been exploring the garden and drawing some of the bush tucker, while coming up with some ideas of what we could name the trail.
